Seniors lauded in Riverview TIMES & TRANSCRIPT September 28, 2015
Seniors were celebrated in Riverview on Sunday as the community came together to recognize the International Day of Older Persons. “You are the leaders of our community,” Father Phil Mulligan, of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, told the full room of seniors at the Fundy Chocolate River Station on Coverdale Road. It’s the fifth year the Town of Riverview Seniors Roundtable has hosted the event and it has grown every year.
“We may outgrow this room too,” said master of ceremonies Kelly Bastarache, looking out at the packed venue. The event featured Ivan and Vivian Hicks with the Sussex Avenue Fiddlers, and a fashion show was also held for the crowd.
Three centenarians were also recognized for their milestone of 100 years. Muriel Copeland, 100, Gertie LaPierre, 103, and Mildred Wilson, 101, were honoured, though only LaPierre was present. Family members of the other two honourees represented them at the event.
Riverview Mayor Ann Seamans addressed the crowd and thanked the seniors for their contributions. “In Riverview we’re so lucky we have such active people of all ages,” said the mayor. “It makes our town such a great place. Riverview MLA and Opposition Leader Bruce Fitch got a laugh from the crowd when he told the group that he and his wife are over 55 and getting closer to being seniors. “Some places consider age 55 a senior,” he said. “I know I’m looking for every discount I can get.”
The United Nations General Assembly designated Oct. 1 the International Day of Older Persons on Dec. 14, 1990.
